From Charm City Cakes, The Dessert For President Obama's Commander-In-Chief's Ball

Celebrity baker Duff Goldman, star of Food Network's now-defunct hit show Ace of Cakes, is creating a giant, six-tiered cake that will be served on Monday night at President Obama's Commander-in-Chief's Ball.  The work is being done at Goldman's Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Md., and the Presidential Inaugural Committee has released photos of the construction and decorating action, taken on Sunday. Goldman's cake will be three to four feet tall, weigh about fifty pounds, and be covered in fondant, he told AP.  The decorations will feature sparkling silver stars and patriotic striped bunting, and include the Presidential Seal and the seals of the military branches honored at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball.  The layers will be red velvet, lemon poppy seed, pineapple coconut, and pumpkin chocolate-chip.  (Above, the six cake tiers and star decorations)

The cake will also have the Latin motto on the seal: E pluribus unum.

“This is one you really want to spell check, big time,” Goldman said.

The party at the Washington Convention Center is one of just two Balls that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will attend this evening; they're due to start partying at 8:45 PM.

Goldman and his Charm City crew are baking five other cakes for various inauguration events, including a four-foot replica of the White House.

Goldman said he played it cool when the Presidential Inaugural Committee called about two weeks ago to ask him to make the cake.

"When you get off the phone you get to scream, ‘We’re making the inaugural cake,'" Goldman said.

So far, ball organizers have not released menus for the parties.

The cake for the final inaugural Ball of President Obama's career, the Staff Inaugural Ball on Tuesday night, is a 500-pound masterpiece from Eli's Cheesecake Company in Chicago.  It's being made at the Chicago headquarters, and will be driven more than 700 miles overnight tonight to DC, arriving on Tuesday morning.
