President Obama and the First Family traveled by motorcade one block across Lafayette Square from the White House to attend a service on Monday morning at St. John's Episcopal Church, ahead of the inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol. (Above, the President waves as he arrives)
The First Family has worshipped at the church before, and attending a service at the church on inauguration day is a tradition. St. John's is known as 'The President's Church,' and has welcomed all presidents since 1816. Pew 54 is the President's Pew, and is reserved for the chief executive's use when in attendance.
The First Family arrived at 8:45 AM at the corner of 16th St and H St. NW, and The Reverend Dr. Luis León, fourteenth Rector of St. John's Church, greeted them on the steps of the church. The President and pastor shook hands.
The President and First Family attended service at Metropolitan AME church on Sunday, ahead of his White House swearing-in ceremony.
